How To Gain An Edge

Looking to gain a competitive edge? The whiteboard is your ally. It's a fast way to simplify complex solutions into 3 easy action steps.

Don't worry if you feel you can't draw. These tips are quick and simple.

Tip 1: Draw 3 Boxes
Whether your topic is complex, strategic, or technical you can divide action into three steps.

gain edgeIf you think you can't, you are making things too complicated. Your audience is listening and watching you. They expect and want you to simplify things for them. Draw 3 boxes.

They will breathe a sign of relief. Here's what they are thinking: "Finally! Someone understands how crazy busy I am. Just three steps. That's simple. I can do it."

Hint: plan your 3 boxes before you begin planning your presentation. Start with the end in mind.

Tip 2: Write 1-2-3
I know. It seems like a little thing. But it's not. Some people in your audience will really relate to the numbers. It makes the three boxes even more accessible. Hmmm… like, one, two, and three.

Easy, eh?

Tip 3: Link With Arrows
Arrows spell action. Add the arrows and you've got a story. For an extra "ta-da" effect, write a key word to show success.

Here are a few I like to use:
Big wins!
Success
Sales
On target

Adapt these to your presentation.

Let's recap. Draw three boxes. Write three numbers. Add arrows.

Give clear directions with a simple whiteboard sketch. Your sketch leads your audience – and they will follow.
